The Red Rock site hosts many of the public events hosted by the Society. This site is located on State Park property and has some restrictions on night time use. For our regular star parties, the park provides special permission to setup scopes at the Visitor Center’s parking lot or at the Red Rock Overlook parking lot (just past the Visitor Center turn off). The Sandstone Quarry is located at the third stop area on the scenic loop on the right.
The most common route is to take Charleston Blvd. west until it changes to Highway 159 (just east of I-215) Continue on 159 for about 15 miles until you see signs on the north for the Red Rock Visitor Center.
Take I-15 south to the Cima turnoff. This is 8 miles past Mountain Pass. Take the Cima Road southeast (left off I-15) for 11 miles. Look for the “Teutonia Peak Trail Head" sign. Site setup is accessed by a dirt road on the left just past the sign. Teutonia Peak is the rather unimpressive cluster of crags (sorta mountain-ish) to the left (southwest). It can't be missed. You will be looking at the northern and very rounded slopes of Cima Dome - Teutonia Peak is the only thing on the slope that even resembles a mountain.
An alternate route from Las Vegas is to take I-15 south into California. Passing Primm, Nevada, look for the Nipton Road turn-off (just before Mountain Pass) and take it. Cross over the highway and take the Nipton Road east for a few miles until you reach the signed Ivanpah Road. Turn right. Head southish on Ivanpah Road for a couple of miles to the signed Morning Star Mine Road. Turn right. After a few miles, you will come to a stop sign, which also serves as a junction for Morning Star Mine Road, Kelso Cima Road, and Cima Road. Hang a direct right onto Cima Road. After passing a few abandoned buildings, you will soon come to the signed dirt parking area (on the left) for Teutonia Peak. This is the setup area.
The Cold Creek observing site is near the small community of Cold Creek which is located west of the two prison sites on Hwy 95 north of Las Vegas and just south of Indian Springs. From Las Vegas, take US 95 north to the prison site on the west side of the road. Turn left on the hard surface road and pass between the two prisons. Drive about 9.5 miles after turning off of Hwy 95 and take a left turn on a small dirt trail. Go approximately 300 yards on this trail to the site.
To get to Valley of Fire, head north from Las Vegas on Interstate 15, and take the exit near Crystal to Route 169 (Exit 75). Follow route 169 to the entrance gate of the park. Setup is normally in the parking lot of the White Domes.
