The TeleVue Equalizer
By Geary Keilman

OK, What is an Equalizer? Well it isn’t a TV series and it isn’t a firearm. It is simply a 2” to 1.25” eyepiece adapter that is made of bronze. The Equalizer adapter is purposely made out of this more massive material to make it considerably heavier than the usual aluminum adapters. Use of the Equalizer with 1.25” eyepieces maintains telescope balance and thereby prevents the telescope from “ground slewing” when switching from the lighter 1.25” eyepieces to the heavier 2” eyepieces. Dobsonian mounted reflectors with 2” focusers will probably benefit the most from being equipped with the Equalizer, negating the need for additional counterbalancing of the tube when changing eyepieces.

The idea is simple and works very nicely. The Equalizer is a typical TeleVue product in that it is beautifully made. Rather than using a set screw to hold the eyepiece, as in most focusers and adapters, it uses a locking ring operated by a captive knurled knob. The base of the Equalizer that faces the secondary mirror or diagonal mirror is angled so as to reduce stray light from entering the eyepiece. I went ahead and painted this area with flat black paint but this probably isn’t necessary.

The unit retails for abut $60.00. While not exactly cheap, it is a good value and it really is does contribute to observing ease and convenience. Check out www.televue.com for additional information and specifications.

I know this review is short, but what more can you say about a product that has no moving parts and no software.
